Not all roaches are the same. The German cockroach and American cockroach look different, behave differently, and require completely different treatment approaches. Getting the identification wrong means wasted time and money. Here is how to tell them apart and what to do about each.
German Cockroach
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is the most common cockroach in GTA apartments and indoor spaces. If you live in an apartment building, this is almost certainly what you have.
Identification:
- Size: 1.3 to 1.6 cm (about half an inch)
- Color: Light brown to tan
- Markings: Two distinct dark stripes running parallel from behind the head to the wings
- Where found: Kitchens, bathrooms, near appliances, in electrical outlets
Why they are a problem:
German cockroaches are indoor survivors. They nest in wall voids, behind electrical outlets, under sinks, and inside appliances. They reproduce rapidly: each female produces an egg case (ootheca) containing 30 to 40 nymphs, and she can produce a new egg case every few weeks. A single female can create a population of thousands within months.
They carry bacteria on their bodies, including Salmonella and E. coli. Their shed skins and droppings trigger allergic reactions and asthma, especially in children.
American Cockroach
The American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) is the large roach often seen in basement stairwells, sewer drains, and commercial buildings. It is sometimes called a water bug or palmetto bug.
Identification:
- Size: 3 to 5 cm (up to 2 inches)
- Color: Reddish-brown
- Markings: Light yellow band around the edge of the pronotum (shield behind the head)
- Where found: Basements, sewers, boiler rooms, commercial kitchens
Why they are a problem:
American cockroaches prefer damp, dark spaces. They live in sewers, basements, and drainage systems. They can fly short distances in warm weather. While less common in homes than German roaches, they can enter through drains and foundation cracks.
Treatment Differences
German cockroach treatment requires:
- Gel bait applied in cracks, crevices, and wall voids
- Targeted application behind appliances and in electrical outlets
- Sanitation: no food left out, garbage sealed
- Follow-up visits because eggs continue hatching
- Building-wide coordination in apartments
American cockroach treatment requires:
- Exclusion: seal cracks in the foundation and around pipes
- Outdoor perimeter treatment around the building foundation
- Void treatment for sewer connections
- Less emphasis on indoor sanitation
Common GTA Locations
German cockroaches thrive in:
- High-rise apartments in Thorncliffe Park
- Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue towers
- Older apartment buildings city-wide
- Student housing near U of T and York
American cockroaches are found in:
- Basements and sewer systems city-wide
- Commercial restaurants and food processing areas
- Laundry rooms in older buildings
Cost of Treatment
- German cockroach treatment (condo): $200 to $400
- German cockroach treatment (house): $350 to $600
- American cockroach treatment: $250 to $500
- Building-wide treatment program: $1,500 to $5,000+
Prevention
- Seal gaps around pipes and electrical conduits
- Keep food sealed and stored properly
- Fix leaky taps and pipes
- Keep the kitchen and bathroom clean
- Dispose of garbage daily
- In apartments, coordinate with building management
