Pest control in Etobicoke

Etobicoke is raccoon country. The Kingsway, Thorncrest Village, and the streets around Princess Margaret Boulevard have some of the biggest mature trees in the city — and those trees give raccoons direct highway access to rooflines. Cedar shake roofs, which are common in the Kingsway, are the easiest material for raccoons to tear through. South of the Gardiner, it is a different story. Mimico and Long Branch have waterfront rat activity that people do not expect — Norway rats burrowing under foundations near the lake. The Lakeshore condo boom has introduced bed bug and cockroach problems to what used to be a quiet, low-density area. Up in Rexdale, the townhome complexes along Kipling deal with mice moving between shared walls, and cockroaches in the older apartment towers along Islington.

Etobicoke straddles two very different pest worlds. The northern neighbourhoods — Kingsway, Thorncrest, Humber Valley Village — are wealthy, tree-lined, and full of raccoons. These are older homes with mature landscaping that gives wildlife easy roofline access. Cedar shake roofs (still common in the Kingsway) are raccoon magnets because the animals can peel the shakes back with their hands. Squirrels chew through the decorative plastic roof vents on these homes in minutes.

The south end is different. Mimico and Long Branch are close to the lake, and the moisture drives both carpenter ant activity and, increasingly, Norway rats that burrow under foundations near the waterfront. New Toronto's older housing stock has the same settling foundations and cracked mortar that mice exploit across all of Toronto's older neighbourhoods. The Lakeshore Boulevard condo corridor has brought high-density pest issues — bed bugs and cockroaches — into an area that did not deal with them a decade ago.

Rexdale and north Etobicoke have significant multi-unit housing: townhome complexes and apartment buildings where shared walls and infrastructure create the conditions for rodents and cockroaches to move freely between units. The Humber River runs along Etobicoke's eastern edge and Centennial Park sits in the middle of the district — both serve as wildlife reservoirs that keep raccoon and skunk populations high in every surrounding neighbourhood. Alderwood's mid-century bungalows see mice enter through cracked foundations and the gaps around original steel-frame windows that have never been replaced.

Pest Seasons in Etobicoke

Spring

Raccoon baby season hits the Kingsway and Thorncrest hard from March through May. Mothers target the cedar shake roofs and older soffit junctions for denning. Carpenter ants emerge along the Humber River corridor — the moisture-damaged wood around old bathroom windows is where the nests start.

Summer

Wasp nests grow fast along the lakefront. Yellowjackets are especially aggressive near outdoor patios in Mimico and Long Branch by late August. Paper wasps build under eaves throughout the suburb. Ant trails show up on every kitchen counter in Alderwood.

Fall

Mice start moving into south Etobicoke homes by early October — the aging foundations in Mimico and New Toronto have more entry points than newer construction. Squirrels race to get into attics across the Kingsway and Islington before the first frost. Rats increase near the waterfront.

Winter

Rodent infestations peak inside walls across all of Etobicoke. Cockroach problems in Rexdale and Islington apartment towers intensify when windows stay closed and the heat runs. Centipedes show up in the damp basements of mid-century bungalows in Alderwood and Markland Wood.
