Pest control in Brampton

Brampton is the GTA's fastest-growing city, and that growth is the reason for half the pest calls. Mount Pleasant, Heritage Heights, and Brampton West went from farmland to subdivisions in under a decade. Those new homes settle. Foundations shift. Gaps open around gas lines and water pipes. Mice find those gaps the first fall. In the older parts of the city — Bramalea, Heart Lake, the streets around Gage Park — the problems are different. Mature trees give raccoons rooftop access, and the Etobicoke Creek running through the middle of town is a wildlife corridor for everything from raccoons and skunks to rats. Brampton also has a huge stock of townhome complexes, and shared walls between units mean mice, cockroaches, and even bed bugs travel between homes through wall cavities and plumbing chases.

Brampton's pest profile is a direct result of how fast it has grown. The subdivisions in Mount Pleasant and Heritage Heights were built on former farmland, and the field mice that lived in those fields did not leave when the houses went up — they moved inside. New construction settling gaps around utility penetrations give them the opening. It is the same story in Brampton West: unsealed pipe entries through poured concrete foundations that the builder missed or that opened up after the first winter freeze-thaw cycle.

The older parts of Brampton are different. Bramalea was built in the 1960s and 70s, and those homes have 50+ year old soffits, roof vents, and mortar joints. Raccoons target the aluminum soffits that have loosened over decades of freeze-thaw. Heart Lake has mature trees that give squirrels highway access to every roofline in the neighbourhood. The Etobicoke Creek runs through the heart of the city past Gage Park and through Bramalea — it is a raccoon and skunk corridor that delivers wildlife directly into residential streets.

Springdale's townhome complexes are a particular challenge. Shared walls between units create hidden pathways that mice and cockroaches use to move from one home to the next. Treating one unit without addressing adjacent ones is a temporary fix at best. Castlemore's estate homes on the northern edge of the city back onto farmland and the Gore conservation lands — the wildlife pressure from that direction is constant. Brampton is projected to keep growing for another 20 years, which means the pest challenges will only increase as more farmland becomes housing.

Pest Seasons in Brampton

Spring

Raccoon mothers hit Bramalea and Heart Lake attics from March through May. The older rooflines in these neighbourhoods are the easiest targets. Ants emerge aggressively around the foundations of newer homes in Mount Pleasant — the disturbed soil from construction supports large pavement ant colonies.

Summer

Wasp nests show up on the vinyl siding and open soffits of newer Brampton homes faster than anywhere else in the GTA. Yellowjackets build ground nests in the freshly sodded yards of Heritage Heights and Brampton West. Ant trails are constant in kitchens across the city.

Fall

The big mice season. Brampton gets hit harder than most GTA cities because of the volume of newer construction with unsealed settling gaps. October is when homeowners in Mount Pleasant and Springdale start hearing scratching in the walls. Rats increase near the commercial strips along Queen Street and Steeles.

Winter

Mice are everywhere indoors. Cockroach problems in the older apartment buildings and townhome complexes intensify with closed windows and heating. Bed bug activity in multi-unit buildings does not slow down in winter — the warm indoor environment keeps them breeding.
