Pest control in Mississauga

Mississauga surprises people. It is Canada's sixth-largest city, but most of it was built in the last 40 years, and newer homes get mice just as often as old ones — just through different entry points. In Erin Mills and Churchill Meadows, houses built in the 2000s and 2010s develop settling gaps around utility penetrations that mice find within the first few winters. Port Credit and Lorne Park are the opposite: mature tree canopies and older rooflines that raccoons and squirrels target year after year. The Credit River cuts through the city from the escarpment to the lake, carrying wildlife into backyards in Streetsville, Meadowvale, and everywhere downstream. Hurontario's condo towers are introducing bed bug and cockroach issues that Mississauga did not deal with a decade ago.

Mississauga's pest challenges split neatly along age lines. The newer subdivisions in Erin Mills, Churchill Meadows, and Lisgar were built fast during the 2000s housing boom, and many have construction gaps where gas lines, water pipes, and cable enter the foundation. Mice find these gaps the first October the temperature drops. The builders sealed the obvious holes, but not the ones you need a flashlight and a mirror to see.

The established neighbourhoods tell a different story. Port Credit's character homes along the lakefront have mature trees that give raccoons a direct path to the roof. Lorne Park's larger lots and older rooflines attract squirrels. Clarkson has waterfront rat activity that surprises homeowners — Norway rats burrowing along the lakefront where the soil stays soft. Streetsville's heritage village core has century homes with fieldstone foundations where mice have used the same entry routes for generations.

Meadowvale's 1980s subdivisions are hitting the age where soffits and fascia boards deteriorate enough for wildlife to exploit. The plastic roof vents installed 35 years ago are brittle now, and squirrels chew right through them. The Hurontario corridor, with new condo towers going up for the LRT, is bringing high-density pest issues to a city that was designed around suburban living. Bed bugs in shared-wall townhomes and cockroaches traveling through condo plumbing risers are the new normal along that strip.

Pest Seasons in Mississauga

Spring

Raccoon calls start in March across Port Credit and Lorne Park. Mothers target the aging rooflines on homes with mature tree canopy. Carpenter ants wake up along the Credit River corridor — watch for frass near any window or door frame that has had moisture issues.

Summer

Wasp nests explode in July and August. Every other house in Erin Mills and Churchill Meadows ends up with a paper wasp nest under the eave or a yellowjacket ground nest in the front garden. Ant trails are constant in kitchens across all Mississauga neighbourhoods.

Fall

This is when Mississauga's newer homes get hit. Mice find the construction gaps around utility penetrations in October, and by November they are in the walls. The settling gaps on 10–15-year-old homes in Lisgar and Churchill Meadows are the most common entry points. Squirrels target Meadowvale's aging plastic roof vents.

Winter

Mice are fully established indoors by December. Cockroach issues in Cooksville and the Hurontario condo towers persist through the heating season. Rat activity continues near the commercial strips along Dundas and Hurontario.
