Detect a Bat Infestation in Your GTA Attic Early

By PestRecord Editorial Team

Bat infestations are the most overlooked wildlife problem in GTA homes. Unlike raccoons or squirrels, bats make no noise during the day. You could have a bat colony for years without knowing it. Here is how to detect the problem before it becomes severe.

Why Bats Are Hard to Detect

Bats sleep during the day. They hang upside down in dark attic spaces and do not move or make sounds until dusk. You cannot hear them in your living space.

Unlike other wildlife, bats leave minimal visible signs. Their droppings are small and dry. Unless you specifically look in attic spaces, you would not know they are there.

Signs of a Bat Infestation

Scratch marks at roof and soffit edges. Bats leave faint scratch marks where they enter and exit. Look along roof edges, soffit seams, and around attic vents.

Droppings on the ground. Bat droppings, called guano, accumulate below entry points. They look like small, dark pellets. Check your ground-level roof edge and ledges.

Oily stains at entry points. The oils in bat fur leave dark stains where they enter. These stains appear at gaps in roof sheathing and soffit junctions.

Chirping at dusk. As the sun sets, listen for high-pitched chirping outside. If you hear it, bats are leaving the roost to feed.

GTA Bat Species

The big brown bat is the most common species in the GTA. It roosts in attics and buildings. The little brown myotis is smaller and less common but also present. Both species form colonies.

Roosting Preferences

Bats prefer dark, warm attic spaces with minimal disturbance. They roost in small colonies, typically 20 to 50 individuals but sometimes much larger. They enter through gaps as small as one-half inch.

When to Act

The longer a bat colony inhabits your attic, the more droppings accumulate. Bat guano contains histoplasmosis fungus, which causes respiratory issues in humans. If you suspect bats, act quickly.
