A Year-Round Seasonal Pest Prevention Guide for GTA Homeowners
By PestRecord Editorial Team
Pest problems in the GTA follow the seasons. What you do in each season determines whether small pest issues become full infestations. Here is your month-by-month prevention guide.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is when carpenter ants begin their search for new nesting sites. March and April are the critical months for carpenter ant inspection. Look for small piles of sawdust near wooden structures and listen for rustling sounds in walls on warm afternoons.
Also in spring, wasps queens emerge and begin building new nests. May is the best month for preventive wasp nest removal before colonies grow large.
Spring is also the time to clean gutters, trim branches away from your roofline, and inspect your foundation for cracks before summer rains arrive.
Summer (June to August)
Summer brings mosquitoes, fleas, and increased ant activity. June is the best month to start a mosquito reduction program, which includes eliminating standing water on your property.
Flea season peaks in July and August. If you have pets, apply year-round flea control and vacuum your home regularly. If you notice fleas despite prevention, get free quotes from licensed flea treatment operators promptly.
Summer is also prime travel season, which means increased risk of bringing bed bugs home from hotels. Check hotel mattresses and keep luggage off the bed.
Fall (September to November)
October is the single most important month for pest prevention in the GTA. As temperatures drop, mice and rats actively seek warm shelter. September and October are when exclusion work pays off the most.
Inspect your home thoroughly before October. Seal gas line penetrations, install door sweeps, and close gaps around pipes. Get free quotes from licensed mouse control operators for professional exclusion advice.
Also in fall, store firewood away from your foundation and bring bird feeders inside or move them far from your home.
Winter (December to February)
Winter may seem quiet but it brings cluster flies, which hibernate in attic spaces and emerge on warm days. Cockroach problems are common in GTA apartment buildings with shared heating systems.
Winter is actually the best time to plan your spring pest prevention. Book inspections for March so you are ready when carpenter ant season begins.
